Avoid The Holiday Bulge - 5 Keys To Stay On Track With Your Exercise Program

Avoid The Holiday Bulge – 5 Keys To Staying On Track With Your Exercise Program This Holiday Season

Move By Design

After your health, time is arguably your most valuable asset.

The problem is, especially during this time of year, so many different things & people are making demands on our time, from work deadlines, to shopping, and family. Often times we let these ‘other’ demands supersede our own needs and wants (Christmas is about giving, right?).

And what’s interesting is that in order for us to have the time, energy and resources to be able to give attention to each of these demands, we need to take care of ourselves first. How often have you thought to yourself, “Man! I really wanted to get to the gym today, but I HAD to  _______________?”

Well, not this year! This year is going to be different…

This year, with the help of the 5 easy strategies below, you’re going to start by staying on track with your exercise program!

And here’s how:

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

I know from personal experience, if I don’t actively schedule specifically when I’m going to do something, and make a commitment to doing it by writing it down in my planner, the odds are fair that I’ll procrastinate, push it back, and I’ll run out of time by the end of the day.

Create space for the gym. Write it down in your schedule. Commit to it.

Enlist A Workout Partner

Accountability can be a game changer, whether it’s business or personal goals.

Staying on track with goal setting can be really tough, so why do it alone? Post your goal on Facebook or tell a gym buddy or accountability partner. You’ll not only get some much needed social support and motivation, but being accountable to somebody else adds an extra ‘layer of guilt’ if you do skip the gym or start to drift off track.

Use Your Holidays As A De-load Week

The funny thing about Christmas is that it’s the same date every year… so plan for it!

You know that…

a. your schedule is probably going to fill up with family stuff and…

b. you’re probably going to be eating stuff that’s not going to fuel you properly (lets be honest here…) so why not ramp up your training for the first 3 weeks of December, and then have a slower week in the wake of Christmas?

Just to be clear, this doesn’t mean you go to the gym and spend most of your session on the phone. This means that maybe instead of heavy lifts and intense conditioning, have a lighter lifting week with a bigger emphasis on mobility and/or stretching so that you’re still moving and keeping with your gym habit, but not pushing yourself to the limits.

Stack Up On Move Slow

Move Slow is a part of the Move By Design Training System™ that often gets overlooked, however, it’s really easy to fulfill this part of your movement requirements.

Get out and take a walk. Go skiing. Go for a hike or snowshoe in Gatineau Park. Go tobogganing.

The list of things you could do is seemingly endless, and best of all, you can involve your family in most, if not all of the cool activities on this list.

Attend A Move By Design Seminar

Movement is a requirement for optimal health, however not all exercise is the same in terms of its net benefit. When it comes to exercise and fitness, there’s nothing worse than investing time, energy and money doing the wrong thing…
