Healthy TV | Episode 043
Are you looking for a super-simple way to figure out portion size for your meals?
Here’s one I use all the time and it works equally well for both kids and adults!
…and bonus – there’s no scales, calculators or complicated formulas involved 🙂
Do You Even Portion Control?
If you’ve grown up in North America I can almost guarantee at some point you have considered the question: How much should I be eating? What’s the right portion size for me, for my kids…
Not to mention the billion dollar weight loss industry that is primarily based on the belief that it all boils down to ‘calories in:calories out…’ Its no surprise there are all kinds of ways to track your food intake… Everything from the humble calorie count all the way up to complex software that requires accurately weighing every chunk of food that goes into your mouth and tells you exactly how much protein, fat and carbs you are eating on the daily…
For some people, the complexity is satisfying. But for most, counting anything is simply a non-starter.
Enter the ‘hand method.’
While I’m not suggesting this method is perfect for every individual (athletes and highly active for example) it’s a good ball-park and can at least be a gut-check on your portions currently.
Now if you’re new to our page, you’ll want to check out our Eat By Design Quick Start Guide because it will give you a bunch of other shortcuts to eating healthier without ever counting a single calorie 🙂
Primal Portion Control
In the video, I go through a super simple method that uses the size of your hand to determine how much of different kinds of foods you should be eating. aka ‘ the hand method’ of portion control, it applies a very simple logic: For almost every human being their hands are proportional to their bodies.
Watch once and you’ll know how to accurately build your own plate along with your friend’s 7 yo daughter…:)
